というのはもちろん冗談だが、そうぼやきたくなるほどの大したイロモノ、

もといシロモノだと思う。さすが。

なるほど鑑識用語は難解で、特に初めのころは頭の中が疑問符だらけだった

けれど、それがどんどん気にならなくなるほどに展開にぐいぐい引き込まれて

いった。それぞれの現場で緻密に集められた証拠を一つ一つ分析するとともに

一覧表にして検証できるようにしてあるので、読者も捜査に参加しているかの

ような気分になれるし、なにより定期的に情報整理できるのが有り難い。

そうしてテンポよく息もつかせずクライマックスまで牽引されていき、

揚句に用意周到、幾重にも仕掛けられた捻りに一網打尽にされてしまう、と

いったところか。

してやったりとほくそ笑むDeaverの顔が目に浮かぶようだ。

もうひとつ注目したのはやはりLincolnとAmeliaの関係の変化。最初はLincolnに

よって強引に捜査に引きずりこまれ激しく抵抗したAmeliaが、Lincolnの目と

なり耳となり、手足となって働き、心理的にも魅かれ合うというより吸引しあうと

言ったほうがしっくりくるくらい接近していく過程が、とても興味深かった。

科学という理知的な部分と男女の仲という感情的な部分のバランスが良い

おかげで、極めて専門性の高い内容でも決して堅苦しい印象が残らないという

構成が、本当にすごいと思う。もちろん、これに続く作品も読む。

②ハラハラ、ドキドキ

科学捜査の専門用語が結構出てくるので、慣れないうちは少し読みにくいかもしれませんが、

読むうちにどんどん引き込まれていきます。　実は、巻末にリンカーンライム自身による

用語辞典がついているのですが、Kindle版で読んだ私は最後までこの存在に

気づきませんでした。　参考にしながら読めば、もっと理解しやすかったのにと思いました。

最後にどんでん返しがあるのでお楽しみに！

ネタバレになるので詳細は書きませんが、Bone Collectorという題から想像できるとおり、

異常者が犯人なので、途中かなりグロテスクな描写がでてきます。　

ということで悪夢を見そうなのでbedtime readingとしてはおすすめしません。

③Triangle　Shirtwaist　Facｔory　Fireを教えてくれた

ジェフリー・ディーバーのこの作品を購入したのは、もう10年前のことである。

それなのに他の作家に時間を取られて、ちりが積もるのに任せてしまった。

そんな本を改めて読み始めたのは、「ウォッチ・メーカー」（原題：COLD　MOON）が

高く評価されているのを雑誌で見て、それならライム・シリーズの第1作も面白いだろうと

期待したことによる。結論から言えば、筋は非常に読ませるものがある。次々と起こる殺人に

して、この作品の中で出会ったリンカーン・ライムとアメリア・ザックスが最初は反感を持ちながらも、徐々に親しくなって事件を解決していく。但し私もそうであったが、読者の中には、犯人像が徐々に明らかになっていくのに、逮捕に繋がらないことにイライラさせられる向きも多いのではないだろうか。それでも‘Triangle　Shirtwaist　Factory　Fire’のような歴史的な事件も効果的に用いられており（実に悲惨な事件にもかかわらず、この本を読んで初めて知った。）、星3つに近いものの、星4つにした。この終わり方はないな、とは思うけれど……。
