①極上の音楽
「ブエナ・ビスタ・ソシアル・クラブ」は、１９３２年に設立されたこの社交クラブの名に由来する。社交クラブといっても、会員の中心はゴミ収集などで生計を立てていた地域の貧しい黒人住民。入会の条件は、「礼儀正しいこと」と「非の打ち所のない道徳を備えていること」の二つ。会員は週末になると貧しいながらも精いっぱいのおしゃれをして音楽とダンスを楽しんだ。
貧しくとも、人には優しく、清く正しく。ハバナの人々は、人に対しても、音楽に対しても真摯であるのか。このアルバムおよび映画で大成功して報酬を得たベテランミュージシャンは、そのお金を貧困にあえぐ親戚に送ったらしい。本人は、相変わらず靴磨きで生計を立てる日々を送るのであった。
この自分に置き換えてみたら、どうだろう。大金を得たら、親戚にばら撒くか？そこまで人に優しくできるか？高級車と高級ワインを購入して、とびきり仕立ての良いスーツを着ないか？家庭崩壊寸前になるような遊びに手を染めないか？人としての品格とは何だろうか。人としての誠実さとは何だろうか。その答えを身を持って教えてくれる、老練なミュージシャンが演奏する音楽が、人の心を打たないわけがない。
②ブエナ・ビスタ・ソシアル・クラブ
生きると言うこと。
命が音になってほとばしる、ということ。それが過不足なく体現されたのがこの一枚だ。
どこかもの悲しい海辺の夕暮れ、街並みに流れてゆく葉巻の香り、真昼の熱に萎れた植物、星たちに空を占領されるほんの一瞬前の、至福のひととき。朝になれば、またそれらは独特の活気を取り戻すに違いない。嘘も偽りもない、繰り返す日常の風景がそこにはある。
音楽界から忘れられ長く苦しい暮らしを余儀なくされた彼らの時間さえ、音楽という波で洗い流したら、こんなやさしく甘美なイメージになるのだろうか。ライ・クーダーによって見いだされ再び演奏する機会を得た老プレイヤーたちの、音楽への歓び、感謝の心が聴く者に生き生きと伝わってくる。音楽と生きることがイコールで固く結ばれた彼らの音楽は、ほんとうにカッコイイ。
③飽きない！
何度聴いても飽きません。
落ち込んだ時やイライラした時に聴くと、そんな事も忘れて心が躍ります。
陽気な中にもどこか哀愁が漂っていて、この上ない素敵な音楽だと思います。
④本当の音楽がここにある
飾りも無ければ気取りもない、大音響でもないし大編成でもない。
しかし、生活を歌うという音楽の原点がここにある。
メンバーは全て還暦を（とっくの昔に）通り過ぎた者ばかりだが、世界中の
どの歌手にも負けないリズムと歌唱とで聞く者の心を揺さぶる珠玉の作品。
⑤おじいたち、サイコー！
教えてもらってたイギリス人の英会話の先生から教えてもらいました。ヴィム・ヴェンダースの映画を観て凄いミュージシャンの集まりだなぁと思い、CDを買いました。部屋で目をつぶってきいていると、まるで彼らが私の部屋で演奏してくれているかのようなライブ感がありますし、演奏もぴか一です。こんな凄いおじいたちがいるなんて・・・ラテン音楽もいいなぁと思いました。
